Club 40 Photo Gallery[#1]

We need a place to post photos of Club 40 planes and action photos. The RCU "Hangout" is pretty active with words, now we will have a place for "Photos".

Post photos of your Club 40 planes, in one piece or more than one piece. Post photos of your racing friends.

Even though many Club 40 planes are pretty stock in color scheme, many people add some color to them. Let's see them!

Hey Duda, commentary on the photos is cool

I had put the trim color on this one and assembled the airframe a while back. But I just got around to finishing it this week.

This was my first glow plane using a spread spectrum radio. I've been using a Spektrum DX-6 with smaller electrics and I love the freedom from channel pins at the field. I used a Spektrum DX-7 with and AR7000 receiver in this one. I've been a Futaba flier mostly and I put way too much expo in this one. I started at 40% and wound up at 20% on elevator and aileron. And 30% on rudder. It feels weird not having the antenna out there, but after a shoot-down that Matthew encountered several weeks ago, I'm going to love not having to worry about that.

I like the checks on the top, but I'm not wild about my choice on the bottom. I can clearly distinguish top from bottom, that's for sure. On the 3 pole course where I'm not looking at the bottom, it looks great.

This Sky Raider Mach II is one of the original color schemes. It is model number A178S.

I've had difficulty in getting the locals to buy Thunder Tiger Pro .40 engines. I've had no problem getting them to buy the Sky Raiders, but most have been using sport .46 engines on them. The most popular prop has been the APC 12.25 x 3.75 Stunt prop because it slows the plane down and increases the aerobatics capabilities. The guys have not been pushing the speed threshold. With that prop, they go about the same speed as a TT Pro 40.

But I wanted to find out just how much more speed can be obtained with an OS .46 AX specifically. So I did a little extra prep on this airframe. I cut out doublers for the cheeks of 1/8" lite plywood. I did not cut out lightening holes and the ply added about an ounce. I removed the balsa triangle stock at the firewall using a 1/2" chisel. I formed a glue fillet where the plywood met the firewall. The nose was much firmer with this treatment. I also reinforced the landing gear blocks with 1/8" aircraft plywood and then .25" chopped carbon fiber.

I put the radio and engine in this morning and did the maiden flight at about 1pm. I used an APC 10x6 prop. The authority that the extra power provided was noticable. I thought it was a little faster than the TT Pro 40 machines. Matthew flew it this afternoon and he said it was noticably faster to him. It is still under 100 mph. But takeoffs are much snappier.

I have found that the APC 9x6 is the fastest prop on a TT Pro 40 in this area. I think I could go with an APC 9x7 on the OS 46 AX and get more speed, but less acceleration than the 10x6 gives.

I will be starting a separate thread about the use of .46 engines in an advanced/local Club 40 class. So please hold those comments for that thread.

I have been completing a plane about every week. Even though I worked 54 billed hours this past week. But I'm getting the Club 40 demo fleet refreshed and ready for more demos and "races".

This is a Sky Raider Mach II Model A178R in the Red trim scheme.

I (somewhat) affectionately call these the clown planes. In reality the red trim scheme is pretty easy to see in the sky and the pink bottom is very easy to see.

This one has a SuperTigre GS-40 on it as I am testing the low buck $50 engine for use in the Club 40 Novice class.

Don,
It looked so lonely in here so I thought an orange plane might spruce the place up a bit.

Look out NC, Vicman is on the prowl!

I'm updating the RCPRO Club 40 Racing - Gallery with links to the various places Club 40 photos are being posted.

Please post links to galleries I should add. And remember, it is now very easy to find the portal for Club 40 at www.Club40Racing.com or just Club40Racing.com.

What is the number on your wing about?

I'm doing a Kurt Busch Miller Lite color scheme Club 40 plane.

I haven't decided what to do with the stab and rudder yet. I've thought about using the wingtip scheme on them, and I have thought about doing the stab in solid blue. The blue/white checkerboard I have is not an exact match on the blue, but would look fine if used appropriately.

Here is the latest progress. I recovered the fin and rudder in blue, and I added the red stripe on the sides of the fuselage.

I'm trying to decide if I'm done, or if I'm going to cover the stab/elevator in red/white checkerboard on the bottom and solid blue on top.

Matthew has a new ride. As you can se from his hat, he is a Dale Earnhardt Junior fan. We did this one in the Amp color scheme.

The first flight on this one was before the race at LMS on 8-16. There was a flutter problem, so we did not fly it in the race. When I got home, I found that the ailerons had over 1/8" of play in them. I was scrambling to get it done and didn't check that. Or else they loosened up from the flutter. I cut out an area on the bottom and could tell the torque rod was loose in the tub. The tube was not glued in, but it wasn't the problem. So I replaced both torque rods with new ones made from 4-40 end threaded rod and 1/8" brass tubing. It was much tighter after the replacement. But just in case I put gap seal tape on it. We flew it just a little while ago and the flutter problem is gone, but the engine is not running right. So I have some test stand work to do today.

Re: Club 40 Photo Gallery[#14]

This is my new Club 40 plane. It is a solid yellow LA Racer 40 that I trimmed using 2" black and yellow ToughLon checkerboard and Ferrari red on the tips.

I usually use low cost ball bearing servos like the JR SPORT ST47BB in my Club 40 planes. But on this one I decided to try high speed, high torque servos. I have the DS 821 servos on elevator and ailerons. I was surprised that I actually can feel the difference. It locks in better and with the slop free ailerons it really grooves. It's not a lot, but for precision flying, it does make a difference. I hope this one lasts until the next race, as it really flies nicely.
