Indoor Reno Racing - Rules

Source: NIRAC - Waterford Nationals

This event is intended to be a pylon race for electric motor powered models that are replicas of "Reno racers" . The models may be made of any material that meets the model specifications, and need not have a landing gear.

Model description: The models may be a replica of any single engine aircraft that has participated in the unlimited class pylon races. The fuselage must be "3-dimensional" and follow the shape of the original closely. The wings must be single surface undercambered with a minimum thickness of 8% from the top of the airfoil to it's lowest two points along the full span. The tail surfaces may be flat plates or symmetrical airfoils. The construction may be from any material that meets the above specifications. The minimum wing area will be 135 sq. in.

Power: The power unit for all models will be a GWS IPS DXA 5.86-1 motor/gear unit

Propeller: The model may have any brand of commercial, unmodified, propeller.

Battery: The battery may be 7.2 Volt nominal pack of 2 Li-Poly cells, 6 NiCad cells, or 6 NiMH cells. The NiCad and NiMH batteries may be in a 9 Volt style case.

Model Weight: The minimum model weight will be 7 ounces, the maximum 8 ounces.

Landing gear: A landing gear is optional. The races will start from a hand launch.

Race Procedure

Race course: The race course will be two pylons set 75' apart. Each heat will be ten complete laps around this course. The pilots will stand in a line parallel to the course centerline, and well to one side. The race will start with the pilots hand launching their planes toward the first turn. Each pilot will judge his own turns. No one may go onto the race course while a heat is in progress.

Officials: There will be an event director, a start/finish flagman, and an observer opposite each pylon to watch for cuts.

Event Procedure: The races will be run in multiple plane heats, with the number of planes for each heat established by the race officials at the beginning of the event. A matrix will be used to provide a fair number of flights for each contestant.

Event Scoring: The scoring system will be the same as published in the current AMA rule book for outdoor pylon racing.
